Exploring the Emotional Landscapes of Sea and Sky
Kayan Lai is a Brisbane-based artist whose practice focuses on seascapes and portraiture, exploring the connection between nature and the inner self. Her work is shaped by themes of mental health, personal memory, and emotional resilience, expressed through intuitive brushwork and carefully observed colour.
Seascapes, clouds, and open skies are central to her paintings. Kayan is drawn to subtle shifts in light, atmosphere, and weather, capturing colours directly from nature rather than aiming for literal representation. The changing sea and sky become emotional landscapes—quiet, expansive, and reflective, allowing space for stillness and contemplation.
The ocean is a recurring presence in her work, symbolising both calm and chaos. Its constant movement mirrors the ebb and flow of human emotion, offering a sense of grounding and healing. Through this lens, her paintings invite viewers to slow down and connect with their own inner rhythms.
Kayan’s work has been recognised in exhibitions and art awards across Queensland. She was a finalist in several prestigious competitions and has exhibited in notable festivals. In 2024, she also presented a live painting at Felons Barrel Hall.
Rooted in place and lived experience, Kayan’s practice reflects a balance of vulnerability and strength, capturing moments of quiet within an ever-changing natural world.
